Skip the Chips & Soda Part I: Serve These Healthy Chip Alternatives Instead!

Chips and soda… the staple at any party, gathering, lunch, or event. They seem to be easy crowd pleasers and relatively affordable. But the average 12 oz soda contains 140 calories and 39g of sugar. The American Heart Association recommends 37g of sugar per day for men and 25g of sugar daily for women. We all want to live healthier and happier. It doesn’t mean we can indulge in a sweet treat or drink every now and then.

This week we have some swaps you can make that won’t have you or your guests missing the chips and soda!  So don’t worry, you won’t be the weird guest or bad host if you show up with one of these alternatives in place of the standard chips and soda. Instead your healthier options may end up being the life of the party! We will start out by sharing some swaps for potato chips, and Thursday we will have a collection of alternatives to soda!

Swap Out Chips With These Alternatives:

Apple Chips – These are a lighter and healthier alternative to the standard potato chip delivering a nice crunch and slightly sweet taste.

Kale Chips – These aren’t as pretty as some chips, but they are very healthy and tasty!

Baked Kale Chips from All Recipes

Soy Crisps – These are super crunchy, high in protein, and taste great alone or with any dip you would normally serve with chips.

Fresh Veggies – These are crunchy and pretty, and serving them with a healthy dip can deliver the salt and tang you crave in a chip! You can save time and pick up a pre-made platter from just about any grocery store these days!

Patriotic Treats to Celebrate the 4th With: Red, White, and Blue Dipped Strawberries!

Who doesn’t love chocolate covered strawberries? This recipe is super simple and has endless possibilities for customizing to your next event. We’ve shared a modified recipe from Sister’s Cafe (click here for original) for Fourth of July themed strawberries (picture also courtesy of their blog), but really chocolate and sprinkles come in just about any color these days – so you can mix it up to coordinate with your next party or gathering!


  • Strawberries, washed and dried
  • White chocolate
  • Blue sugar, edible glitter, or sprinkles


  1. Pour the blue sugar into a bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, melt the chocolate in the microwave on 50% power for two minutes.  Stir until the bowl is no longer warm. Then microwave for 30 second intervals at 50% power, stirring after each, until the chocolate is completely melted.
  3. If you don’t have a microwave (like me!!!) melt the chocolate the old-fashioned way on the stove: place water in a small pot, and nest a metal bowl into the pot so that it rests on the lip of the pot (i.e. nest the bowl into the pot). Melt the chocolate over low heat—if you try to rush it the chocolate will seize up. When the chocolate is almost melted add 1/4 cup more chips and stir constantly until the mixture is smooth. This method is called “tempering” and will set up sugar crystals so the chocolate remains firm at room temperature.
  4. After the chocolate is melted, dip the lower two-thirds of the strawberries in the melted white chocolate.
  5. Then, dip the lower third of the strawberries in the blue sugar or spoon it onto the strawberry.
  6. Place on wax paper until completely cool.
